Sanskrit Instruction

for individuals and small groups at all levels

About Me

I hold a Ph.D. from a top university Sanskrit program in the United States. I have a background in all the major genres in Sanskrit—philosophy in the major traditions (Yoga, Vedanta and the other "orthodox" Hindu systems; Tantra of various sorts; major schools of Buddhism; major schools of Jainism; and others), Vedic hymns, drama and court poetry, mathematics, grammar, and aesthetics, among others. If you have a special interest in something I haven't looked at before, that's great, too; I'm always pleased to learn something new with a student. I have taught at every level, including college, graduate, and private students.

Approach

I will recommend a course of study appropriate to your particular interests, background, and schedule. Wherever practical, I like to begin with the vocabulary and typical style of texts you hope to read.

On the other hand, "reading" doesn't have to be a part of it at all. Much of the most interesting and important work in Sanskrit was originally intended to be heard, not read. We can work together entirely orally, for oral comprehension.

Arrangements

We can meet in person in New York City or by Skype. Fees vary depending on the schedule and needs of the student. If you have questions or to arrange lessons, please email me at d@sanskritinstruction.com.
